Course 1: Cultural Competence Course

The NHCOA’s Cultural Competence Course (CCC) is an integrated, web-based tool to increase the cultural competence of healthcare providers who work with Latino older adults and their families. The course is part of the Salud y Bienestar (Health and Wellbeing) program, which focuses on increasing awareness and education about diabetes among Hispanic older adults. The course, as conceived by the late Dr. Ricardo Dios Aleman, M.D., MPH, DrPH, is designed to fill content gaps found in other cultural competence courses, principally through incorporating the recommendations of the National Standards on Culturally and Linguistically Competent Care (CLAS) and, in future versions, those addressing the institutional side of cultural competence.

We anticipate that, in the near future, completing CCC will help participants earn credits in Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE), as well as Continuing Education Units (CEU) in other health-related fields.

At the end of the course providers will find that they have become more culturally and linguistically competent – an essential skill to improve the communication between healthcare providers and patients. This will lead to higher-quality care, better health outcomes, and greater patient satisfaction.
